After paying the $1.50 to unlock the workbook, I completed the exercises and submitted my answers. Everything still looked legitimate. Then another message arrived. To move forward to the next stage, I needed to pay for a certification that would prove I had successfully completed the workbook.

That was the moment something didn't feel right. I paused.

Why would a company hiring me require me to keep paying money before I had earned a single dollar?

Trusting Your Instincts When Something Feels Wrong

I asked if I could skip the certification and move directly to the Zoom meeting with the project director. The answer was no. The certification had to come first. I insisted:

“Can I meet the director first?”

Suddenly, the tone changed. The messages became more urgent. There was subtle pressure. Gentle persuasion. Reminders about deadlines. Promises about what would happen after I paid. But I had already made up my mind. I wasn't paying another dime.

The Search That Revealed the Truth

Instead, I started searching online. Within minutes, I found posts from other people describing the exact same “job opportunity.”

• Same payments

• Same promises

• Same outcome

It was a scam. Not a dramatic, life-changing scam. A carefully designed scam built around small amounts of money that didn't immediately trigger alarm bells. A dollar here. A few dollars there. Hundreds of hopeful job seekers.

The Unexpected Lesson Hidden Inside the Scam

Ironically, the only thing I gained from the experience was the one thing they never intended to give me. The book. I genuinely learned a lot from it.

It changed how I think about teamwork, communication, accountability, and working toward shared goals. Even today, I still have the PDF saved in my drive. Every now and then, I come across it and smile. The scammers never got their certification fee. But somehow, they accidentally gave me one of the most valuable lessons I learned during my job search:

A legitimate employer pays you to work. You don't pay them for the privilege of being hired.
