In January 2016, a photograph went viral within a couple of days. It showed a Danish humanitarian worker named Anja Ringgren Lovén, kneeling on a dirt road, offering water and biscuits to a two-year-old boy so severely malnourished that many who saw the image assumed he could not survive.
